Brrrrrrr

Today it was too cold to snow. Seriously. We got UP to to 10 degrees (-12 for those of you who think in Centigrade), but it was so windy that when I went to work this morning they were warning of “dangerous” temperatures with windchills close to -30 (or -34C).

On such a day, how could I refrain from naming the class I taught “Warming Up to Library Research”? I couldn’t. But I don’t think any of the students noticed.

Today was also the first day in months that union protesters weren’t holding up their signs outside of the construction site that is apparently not using union labor. They’ve been there rain or shine, snow or fog since late summer, but they appear to draw the line at bone-cracking, life-threatening cold. I’ve grown so accustomed to driving past them several times a day that the vacuum of their absence almost palpable, and it took distinct concentration to keep my eyes on the road rather than on the spot where they should have been.

Then I felt silly for looking and looking at a spot where there was nothing to see.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow (But Not Impact My Travel)

I’m headed an hour north for an all-day forum on the future of the catalog and the ILS, and this is what greeted me in the morning. Don’t get me wrong, I find it impossible to resent snow. But at the same time, I really wish this had held off until tomorrow when I was traveling 100 miles on highways jam packed with other drivers who are also remembering how to drive in snow.

Of course, this is Minnesota, so people here live for snow like no people I’ve ever met… but still.

More pictures are here, here, and here (a really blurry one, but hey… there was no light).

[Update: Oooh, now that it’s later and there’s sun, I’ve got better pictures here and here.]

Impossible Working Conditions

Yesterday was impossible. The entire library came to a standstill (or at least a slow and distractable crawl) at the news that one of my co-workers was having a baby. But, after an entire work day of not getting any work done, the news came that mother and daughter were doing fine.

Then there was celebrating… and then students started shushing us… and we retorted that since we’re on the fourth floor and since it was a special day, we could make a little noise.

Now we all wonder what we’re going to do at the baby shower we’d planned for next week…

Congratulations Ann!
