Category: Blogs and Blogging

Uh-oh

It looks like Daddy Blogger and Bloglines aren’t playing nice. In my Bloglines account all the RSS/Atom feeds for blogger blogs are out of commission at the moment, including mine. (The feeds from Blogger Beta blogs are still working fine.) So if you normally read me in a feed reader, and if you’re checking here to see what I’ve written recently that you haven’t received. Consider switching to my Feedburner feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/PegasusLibrarian.

Here’s hoping the two technologies get over their little tiff soon and start speaking to each other again.

[Update: Things seem to be working now. Yay!]

To Blogger Beta or Not To Blogger Beta, That Is The Question

CW has switched (upgraded?) to Blogger Beta, and the option to do so has appeared on my blog’s “dashboard.” But do I want to? Not being as fearless as CW, I’m a little reluctant to commit my 160 little posts, even though compared to her I have only a baby blog, to a brand new platform.

I’m pretty pleased with some of the new features (like the admittedly somewhat watered down version of categories, built in comment feeds, and the ability to publish posts without republishing the entire blog), but I’m not please that there are still some basics that haven’t made it over to the beta version. Among these is the ability to let people with Daddy Blogger accounts log in and comment on Baby Blogger blogs, or support for browsers other than Firefox and IE.

I guess I’m just not one of those “early adopters,” but I think I’ll hang out in Daddy Blogger for a little while longer. At any moment, though, I may change my mind. Isn’t the suspense killing you?

p.s. Vacation is GREAT. I’ll write more about that when I next get the urge to turn on the computer.

Blogging Confusion

Funny to admit this nearly 150 posts into my blog, but I really don’t know what I’m doing.

I’ve read a few posts in the last few months about what should and should not be blogged, and I’ve begun to learn the art of linking in context. But then I hear of people promising not to talk about personal, political, religious, or off-topic stuff. (I can say from experience that it’s hard to be off-topic when there’s no defined topic, but this breaks the cardinal rule of blogging: build yourself a niche and write to that niche.) I’ve heard that people prefer short posts (hmmm, I’m not always very good at that one). And I’ve learned some of the mechanics of blogging. (Imagine my surprise when I learned, completely by accident, that if I linked to someone else’s blog they would be able to “see” me! I wasn’t sure if this was cool or terrifying.)

Even so, I often find myself wondering whether a particular post is “appropriate” for this blog, or I visit someone else’s blog and see the skill that can only come from experience, and I have to admit that I’m utterly clueless. I can’t even define “appropriate” posts for myself, so how can I be expected to make consistent decisions?

I’ve begun to realize that blogging, like letter writing, is an art as much as a skill. The only difference that I can see is that they teach the mechanics of letter writing in school (or, at least, they used to).

All I can say is that I’ll keep writing and learning. Tips would be appreciated, though I reserve the right to disregard them entirely.

P.S. Ten points to the first person to guess how long it took me to figure out if this post was “appropriate.”
